George Russell held onto the lead of the Canadian Grand Prix to cross the line ahead of Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli, with the race finishing under the Safety Car after Lando Norris drove into the back of his team mate.

Russell confidently held the lead at lights out, but with tyre strategy playing such a crucial role, he came under late pressure from his closest rivals as the top five were separated by less than six seconds at one stage.

While the gaps between the Briton, Verstappen and Antonelli widened slightly, there was an intense battle behind for the final laps between the McLaren pair of Oscar Piastri and Norris, which ended with the latter crashing into the rear of the Australian’s car and retiring from the race.

There was plenty of overtaking on show throughout, especially in the midfield, but Lance Stroll’s attempted pass on Pierre Gasly saw him force the Frenchman off the track, earning him a 10-second time penalty at his home race.

Unable to keep pace with the fight further up the road, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton took fifth and sixth place respectively for Ferrari, crossing the line ahead of Fernando Alonso and Kick Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg. Esteban Ocon and Carlos Sainz rounded out the top 10, with the second Williams of Alex Albon retiring due to a mechanical issue.
